Oh dear -- this was definitely merged prematurely!
I'm not going to revert this, but we should definitely proceed in an orderly
way:
1. DISCUSS / VOTE on the mailing list (this has never really come to a
satisfying conclusion or consensus)
2. Update the specification
3. Update the SDKs
