Review Comment:
   Fixed — the guard is now `(next_ == nullptr || end_ == nullptr) ? 0 : (end_ 
- next_)`, so any null operand (not just the both-null case) is treated as zero 
buffered and the subtraction only runs when both pointers reference a real 
buffer.
