@thiagotnunes indicated offline that this is working around a bug in the
Java client (Thiago, could you share a link to a reference for this bug here?).
The Java client is mocked in Beam unit tests, masking the issue, and we don't
yet have e2e tests that would exercise the client.
Presumably the issue was discovered by manual e2e testing and the fix was
verified the same way.
