Daniel Lemire commented on CALCITE-2024:
----------------------------------------

[~ebegoli] Fantastic. I'm already on Overleaf where I have a pro account (to
create private repos). You can reach me at [email protected]. I am also
available if you want to hold a videoconference. In any case, I'd be interested
in hearing your thoughts on what the "story" of the paper is. There are many
moving parts, and papers that do not have a clearly stated point of view often
struggle (to get written first, to get published second). I usually like to
start with the story and "paper on Calcite" only sounds like a good story if
you already like Calcite... if not... it sounds like a technical thing. I am
not sure Jira is the best venue for having these kinds of exchanges. And it
should probably be done privately.

[~julianhyde] I am very interested in Apache Arrow, obviously. Right now, I
don't know anyone in the core Arrow team. But I do plan to rectify this in
2018. However, if you can connect me, I'd love to chat with people involved in
Apache Arrow---especially if they feel that they want contributions. I did some
fun work on dictionary coding (see https://github.com/lemire/dictionary). I'd
much rather contribute to Apache Arrow than write another "novel" paper, if you
see what I mean...

(Anecdote: I placed an ad and found someone to do a post-doc with me to work on
Apache Arrow... but she was recruited by Amazon who pays much better. I am
still looking for someone interested in doing such an Apache-Arrow postdoc with
me... if you know anyone... sadly, it seems that many of the people able to
string strong code together are not eager for lowly paid post-docs... :( )

> Submit an overview paper, with survey, architecture description, and some
> benchmark components to SIGMOD Record or VLDB Journal.
> SIGMOD Record:
> VLDB Journal:

> I will take a lead on this, create an Overleaf document, and invite all
> interested co-authors, up to 8 or 10.
> Target for completion on this is Jan-Feb 2018, with 3000-4000 words. We
> could also target on of the big conferences, and also look to submit extended
> journal version of the paper. I will ask Dan Suciu or Sam Madden who preside
> over both on their advice on this.
