The "optimum" representation really depends on what you are intending to do
with the result of the marshall. If you are just going to send it down an
HTTP connection or similar, marshalling to byte[] would perform a lot better
(and use about 1/2 the memory) compared to a String.
Really, this needs to be configurable, likely with an option for InputStream as
well (backed by a CachedOutputStream/InputStream for large structures).
