I see you implemented the fix.  But you did not add the deserializers for the 
consumer.  You need to add these keys in your updateClassProperties method:

key.deserializer
value.deserializer

btw, you should probably use the kafka constants as well:

ConsumerConfig.KEY_DESERIALIZER_CLASS_CONFIG
ConsumerConfig.VALUE_DESERIALIZER_CLASS_CONFIG
ProducerConfig.KEY_SERIALIZER_CLASS_CONFIG
ProducerConfig.VALUE_SERIALIZER_CLASS_CONFIG
