-1 - This will break backward compatibility for little value. It should be
considered for a future point when we look to bump from 4.x to 5.x, but frankly
that bump should really be due to a redesign of the API from an implementation
leaky interface to one that reflects the abstract concepts (at least as far as
the Users are concerned).
