Daan,

I agree that solving this in a way that is hypervisor agnostic is best.  By 
making use of the host.reserved.mem.mb property we can do a little math agent 
side to make sure the right value is reported to the management server.  I'll 
get on the dev@ mailing list and start a thread discussing this.
