qed: Not disagreeing. For 3.0.1, improving the error message to avoid your 
'WTF???' is an improvement. Whether we simply strip out the TTL code and let 
the StackOverflowError happen is another question. My personal feeling is in 
line with yours (I think). That is - "let it happen".
