CIFS (aka SMB) is part of the VFS sandbox which is not distributed as part of a
VFS release. It is in the sandbox simply because it has not undergone enough
testing. It uses a fairly old version of JCIFS, which is licensed under the
LGPL. To get the SMB support included in a formal release you should check out
the source from subversion, build it and test it in your environment. Then
submit any patches required to bring it up to a more recent version of JCIFS,
and to fix any bugs you find. The sandbox also has lots of checkstyle issues so
those would want to be cleaned up. I wouldn't imagine this would take a great
deal of effort as the unit tests passed the last time I built the sandbox.
