Another related issue is that this implementation is a translation from the
original algorithm.
Can we make it thread-safe and still make that claim?
To make it thread-safe but not too inefficient, can we depart from the standard
implementation?
How much inefficiency is acceptable from such a utility? If efficiency is not
critical, your suggestion of a wrapper is possibly the right answer.
