The attached patch refactors the code as discussed on the mailinglist.

The implementations have been moved to a sub-package "interval" but I am not 
really happy with it yet (although I do not have a better idea for 
names/packages).

Maybe we should just make the methods static for now and decide later if we 
refactor the code as proposed.
