Do we need to provide compatiblity for test cases?
I would say no, we can do what we like with them.
AFAICT, the solution proposed by Joerg only works for 3rd parties that extend
the original class.
It would not work for subclasses unless they continue to use the deprecated
class - in which case there seems no point.
