Thanks for the patch.
I'm not sure it's safe to change the behaviour like this after so long (it has 
been like this since before 2.0)

However it obviously makes sense to document the current behaviour.
And it would perhaps make sense to add a new method to support the new 
behaviour, though I'm not sure what failures are possible (apart from syntax 
errors in the email address).
