I've refactored the class in commit c0bf9f7d93c9f5fd09bd123a089614727ee1ad6e on
"master". Please have a look (coverage has decreased :().
It is not obvious that this version has not lost some performance wrt the
previous one, but the class is final (which might be an advantage in later Java
versions). Cf. discussion on the "dev" ML.
