GEOMETRY-24, GEOMETRY-33, and GEOMETRY-34 all depend on this issue. I've
actually completed the goals mentioned in this particular issue, but I have
been trying to do 24, 33, and 34 in the same PR so that we can completely
remove the old code. However, it is taking time and becoming a _very_ large set
of changes, so I'm wondering if this is still the best approach.
