Need more details about the constants IS_OS_LINUX, etc. For example, is
IS_OS_LINUX true or false on a mac? I have no idea and don't have a mac handy
to test this. I suspect it is true but who knows for sure? (I don't want to use
IS_OS_UNIX because I fear that is TOO general.)
