One minor note on

would it be worth looking if there's any other library (in C, C++, Python, etc) 
that does something similar, and perhaps try to be as similar to that library 
as possible?

As you said there is no formal specification, maybe at least staying close to 
what existing code does could help us incorporate more changes/code, or get 
other devs to maintain it, I think.
