This seems to happen when <key>UIViewControllerBasedStatusBarAppearance</key>
is set to <false/>
A work around for me was to set it to <true/> (or remove the key since true is
the default) and then in MainViewController.m add:

- (UIStatusBarStyle)preferredStatusBarStyle
{
return UIStatusBarStyleLightContent; //change this to your preferred style
}
