The sync XHR call blocks the client web view, resulting in poor performance. On
devices prior to 10.1, the combination of async XHR and networkResourceHandler
proved too unreliable and ended up blocking anyway.
Since this has been fixed for the last two major OTA updates, I would like to
switch back to async.
