If anyone comes here looking for a workaround: I was able to update my project
to Cordova iOS 3.7.0 using the following steps:
# {{cordova platform update ios}} (this fails)
# look for the line which describes where your cordova npm_cache is, in my case
in ~/.cordova/lib/npm_cache/cordova-ios/3.7.0/package/bin
# cd to that directory, all to way to the bin folder
# {{mkdir node_modules}}
# {{npm install shelljs}}
Then head back to your project dir and re-run {{cordova platform update ios}}.
The node_modules dir will not be removed by the download of cordova-ios 3.7.0,
thus shelljs inside the node_modules will now be picked up.
