This task is about doing the final rounds of refactoring: clean up, removing
the redundant classes if any, tightening the signatures, adding more tests. The
overall complexity is rather high so it won't be possible to resolve this JIRA
and assert the interfaces are completely done but they'd have to be quite close
to the final form
