thanks for pointer - well, it helps partially :)
I do agree and understand that thread-safety is not ensured by the
specification in general. However, on the page you gave the link for it is
stated:

URI or headers is thread-safe.

To my mind this is exactly what we are doing:
# On the main thread, we are creating a new client using
{code:java}
client = ClientBuilder.newClient()
{code}
# Still on the main thread, we then configure a corresponding WebTarget out of
it. There is no proxy configuration involved.
# That WebTarget then gets distributed to the threads.
# The threads then do a
{code:java}
webTarget.request()
{code}
which is the call which fails here in this case.
NB: We even don't get to the point where we would be able to access the
headers of that request (the exception is thrown already earlier).
It might be worth to mention that there may be multiple "main threads" in
parallel. Could this have some possible side effect?
