New patch with further improvements, and rebased against latest master. 2-1
should be applied first, then 2-2. The hygiene component cleans up files
encountered while working on this, but without any substantive changes relative
to scalar replacement; in this case, it mostly cleans up option handling. The
core component has the scalar replacement changes. Patch split into two for
ease in reviewing.
