Some possible precedents:
"TYPEOF" in SQLite.
"EXPRTYPE"in Sybase and SQL Anywhere.
"SQL_VARIANT_PROPERTY", which has a second argument taking values such as
"BaseType", "Precision", "Scale", etc., in SQL Server.
"PG_TYPEOF in PostgreSQL
