The starting and stopping is automatic. You cannot use "Drill in Embedded Mode"
without invoking sqlline. As per the documentation in [installation prereqs |
http://drill.apache.org/docs/embedded-mode-prerequisites/] : _Installing Drill
in embedded mode configures the local Drillbit service to start *automatically*
when you launch the Drill shell._ Here "Drill shell" is referring to the
bin/drill-embedded script, which invokes "bin/sqlline -u jdbc:drill:zk=local"
(basically what you did).
