Paul Rogers commented on DRILL-5970:
------------------------------------
Seems this bug describes two problems. The first is that described in the bug
description. The Parquet file is created with this schema:
{noformat}
message root {
repeated binary MYCOL (UTF8);
required binary Bucket (UTF8);
}
{noformat}
Yet, Drill uses an optional type for the required field:
{noformat}
MYCOL<VARCHAR(REPEATED)> | Bucket<VARCHAR(OPTIONAL)>
{noformat}
The question is: is this a bug or a feature? Very hard to tell.
* *Bug:* The data type in Drill does not match the data type in Parquet.
Drill's internal schema should match he on-disk schema.
* *Feature:* Drill is shema-free: any schema can appear at any time. Drill is
distributed. The optional data type in Drill recognizes that another file, read
by another fragment, may have a different schema without the column. So, all
columns (within Drill) should always be nullable to prevent schema change
exceptions.
Without a specification for how Drill should handle types, both are right
depending on your perspective. Today the code works the second way. Without a
spec, who is to say that the first is not the correct behavior?
> DrillParquetReader always builds the schema with "OPTIONAL" dataMode columns
> instead of "REQUIRED" ones

> The root cause of the issue is that adding REQUIRED (not-nullable) data types
> to the container in the all MapWriters is not implemented.
> It can lead to get invalid schema.
> {code}
