Small potential improvement:
We could communicate the last completed checkpoint, which will serve as basis
for future incremental checkpoints, through the trigger checkpoint message for
that checkpoint, i.e. the trigger determines the base checkpoint for the next
increment. This would be slightly more reliable than going through the
{{CheckpointListener}} mechanism, which is not guaranteed the deliver its
message.
