    Extend InternalAppendingState with get and update methods for internal 
stored state. 
    Implement them in concrete states in backends.

      - *InternalAppendingState* has now methods *getInternal* and 
      - Heap and Rocksdb merging states implement the methods

    This change is a trivial rework / code cleanup without any test coverage.
