I think the performance of the pre-flight phase is mostly irrelevant, even
if it is slow no-one will notice since it only runs once before the job starts.
IMHO, simplicity is key here, and the two different sources require two
code-paths to handle them even though the one source provides a subset of the
functionality of the other source.
