I generally think it is problematic to merge new features almost a week after the feature freeze. If everybody would do this, then the release would drag on forever. In particular if a change is causing build instabilities which block the release process. However in this case, I see the feature is mostly limited to connectors (thus we can revert it in case of instabilities), and it seems that testing of the Kafka connector hasn't started yet either.
