Hello!  If you want some historical information, a good starting point is 
PARQUET-323 – to summarize, the {{int96}} type in Parquet was historical 
(probably for impala timestamps) and quickly deprecated, but still lives on in 
downstream projects.  IIn general, moving away from {{int96}} timestamps is the 
right thing to do.
