That is correct. I think we actually need the opposite of what this JIRA is
suggesting. Checking backwards compatibility is one aspect. Another point is,
that a new serializer version would need some input to figure out how the
interpret the data, i.e. information about the old serializer. If you consider
also nested serializers, such as tuple or array serializer, this topic can
become fairly complex.
