@MartijnVisser Thanks very much for the thorough review - that was helpful and clarified a few things I wasn't certain about. re: housekeeping stuff I've squashed the commits into bfa41ed378ba7e7266d3a31845e2abd3d2bea723 and added the `Generated-by` line to reflect the test commit contribution. I've rewritten the PR description above using the new template. I don't see a way to add a release note in JIRA - possibly I'm just looking in the wrong place, but my guess is that I don't have the right permissions to do this.
