The odd thing to me is that the DEFAULT pool uses localhost.  I would prefer to 
remove this default and require the user to explicitly configure the locator 
address.  That would prevent attempting to connect to a wrong / nonexistent 
locator.  And probably solves the case you're hitting as well.
