I'm part way through a review but have to leave.  So far it looks like less 
moving parts and cleaner overall.  Will finish up review tomorrow.   We could 
set the number of splits to 1 and ship the RC with that but at the moment, 
going by the other issues that need fixing, its looking like next week before 
new RC and that might be time to test this redo of splits.
