Agree what stack said. Since it is rare, I +1 Ted's patch, just abort. We
need to check other place in OpenRegionHander too to do the same.
As to Ted's suggestion to return special return value, it's a good idea.
However, it could cause other issues since it impacts other places where
depends on the -1 thing. I think we should not do it now when we are close to
a release.
