Smile.  I am in same boat as you.  I want to untangle this rats nest so I can 
understand whats going on and try stuff (I want to try pool of bytebuffers -- 
direct bytebuffers even -- for incoming requests.  Putting in netty too would 
be sweet).

Unless you object, was going to commit this since it some progress.  Was going 
to do more along this line soon but in other issues; I'm afraid the refactors 
will rot between getting time to work in here.

The Delay stuff is unused I think.  It was an experiment.  Maybe I'll look at 
that next and purge it if I can.
