Attached HBASE-4205_01.patch proposes the changes related for the non 
thread-safety.

It also points on the close() method that throws IOException. I wonder what we 
should say about that: should a IOException on close() be considered as a 
failed operation? If yes, we need to cleary state this in javadoc.
