HBASE-8542 has a different and more general focus. Raymond wanted a much more
general API change including return of the original value(s). I don't think
they are the same issue. If this can address HBASE-11788, I'd say do this and
close HBASE-8542 as Later unless there's a volunteer to see that one through
now.
