Esteban Gutierrez updated HBASE-11979:
--------------------------------------
Attachment: HBASE-11979.v0.patch
[~apurtell] I don't think there is need to remove it from the UI for now, the
attached patch seems to solve the issue, tested before and after and looks
correct:
*Before* the patch the HBase Master UI shows a progress above 100% during a
major compaction but at the end of the progress settles at 100%.
*After* the patch the progress never goes above 100% and at the end of the
major compaction it finished at 100% as expected.
BTW, I think this got introduced after bloom filters became on by default.

> This is a long standing problem and previously could be observed in
> regionserver metrics, but, we recently added logging for long running
> compactions, and this has exposed the issue in a new way, e.g.
> {noformat}
> 2014-09-15 14:20:59,450 DEBUG
> [regionserver8120-largeCompactions-1410813534627]
> compactions.Compactor: Compaction progress: 22683625/6808179 (333.18%),
> rate=162.08 kB/sec
> {noformat}
> The 'rate' reported in such logging is consistent and what we were really
> after, but the progress indication is clearly broken and should be fixed.
