After thinking about this for a little bit, I think we need to do this by edit
and column family, the way my patch has it.
Please have a look at this patch, I think we should get this in. Along with
this we need to document that you *have* to run HDFS with sync-on-close and
sync-behind-writes. (In fact everybody should do that in any case!)
