You don't need to pass a configuration if you are passing a Connection in below?
public static void metaScan(Configuration configuration, Connection
connection,

.. but if it makes the patch smaller, just leave it as is.
We don't do this in codebase: import org.apache.hadoop.hbase.client.*;
We explicitly import needed classes.
Are all Connections and Tables being closed?
On the failing test, if you can't figure it, you can punt to me and I'll dig
since it is probably testing arcania, stuff I've had my head in this last few
weeks.
