I found it! We were hard coding MAVEN_OPTS once test-patch was running.
unfortunately, we source the file that hard codes MAVEN_OPTS prior to applying
hte patch, so there's no way for hadoop QA to test this without me pushing it.
Can someone do a quick check of this addendum?
