Our API compat standards say apis can change between minor versions but since 
this one is marked stable I'd be slower to just yank the api.  IMO, deprecating 
in 1.1 and also deprecating in 2.0 seems reasonable.

This would be a simple enough patch so that maybe you could just present a 
patch and we could provide feedback in the review?

For Q2, Q3, Q4, Q5, they seem related but increases scope and likely should be 
a separate issue(s).  Let's keep this one focused on the issue mentioned in the 
title.  We can consider the others in another issue or a discusion on 
[email protected]
