The new version of error-prone supports Java 8:

They're now on GitHub of course: https://github.com/google/error-prone
Maybe we change this issue into a task to upgrade to their latest? Or we can
drop it from the build. Depends if anyone sees it as useful. I think,
potentially, it can be very useful, but especially if we develop our own custom
analyses. See discussion on the original motivating issue.
