For the record I'm uncomfortable with how we've said on this issue we can't
make changes to private code because it breaks Phoenix - as evidenced by
reverts once we did. I understand being 'good neighbors'. That's fine, and we
should do that. However this is a slippery slope. These interfaces are marked
private. Phoenix is doing something naughty. Let's get it properly fixed.
