Tried to run canary locally (on branch master) with command: 
bin/hbase org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary -regionserver
Exception was thrown:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: 
org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary$StdOutSink cannot be cast to 
org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary$ExtendedSink
        at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary.newMonitor(Canary.java:640)
        at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary.run(Canary.java:551)
        at org.apache.hadoop.util.ToolRunner.run(ToolRunner.java:70)
        at org.apache.hadoop.hbase.tool.Canary.main(Canary.java:1127)
