Hey [~ndimiduk] (HNY!). I took a look at this patch and what is in 1.2 and it
seems that the spirit of this patch is already in 1.2 (didn't dig to see
provenance). I see that in 1.2 we do assign via master as this patch suggests
and I also see an assert that this patch removes commented out with an
explanation on why the assert is incorrect:

The above change went into 2.0, 1.3, and 1.2 (didn't do 1.1 and before).
