The primary has been moving towards active-active vs active-backup master
architecture.
I don't work on it that now.
I would also check HBASE-11165 - (Scaling to 1 million regions) - this umbrella
jira and some of it's subtasks have interesting discussions, benchmarks and
design docs, which kind of help to shape approach to master architecture.
